From legendary Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, Sweeney Todd is a dark comedy that tells the thrilling story of a mad-man barber returning to his home of London after years of imprisonment. Sweeney has only one goal: to seek revenge on the evil Judge Turpin, who tore apart his family. Along his bloodthirsty quest, Sweeney finds an unlikely partner in Mrs. Lovett, the eccentric owner of a failing pie shop. Together, they concoct an ingenious plan that allows Sweeney to continue his murderous rampage while bringing a new and exciting “flavor” to Mrs. Lovett’s pies.
On October 25th, 26th and 27th Sweeney Todd: School Edition played to 3 enthusiastic audiences in the CISB Auditorium. This was by far the most challenging and mature production undertaken by the CISB StageCats Team. The songs, scenes and characters are so dynamic and complex that it would have been impossible without the passion and hard work of students and teachers.
As this year’s small-cast production, Sweeney Todd provided an enrichment opportunity for some of the most dedicated and talented students at our school. This was also a special production because it was the first time the directors joined student actors onstage as chorus members. The challenging and collaborative quality of this show – along with the darkly comedic subject matter – has made Sweeney Todd an outstanding memory for the CISB StageCats.
Thank you to all those who made this production possible and who took time out of their busy schedules to see the show. We are so thankful to the CISB community for their unwavering support of the StageCats program.
