About Me:

Hello! My name is Angela Knowles, and I am arts educator. My love of theatre began early, when I landed my first speaking role in my elementary Christmas recital. Since then, performing, directing and teaching through the arts has developed into a life-long passion. In my university days, I was drawn to any summer job that involved the arts, and taught at TNB Theatre School and Calithumpians in Fredericton, New Brunswick. I started a summer theatre school called Broadway’s Best in my hometown of Bathurst, New Brunswick along with my husband and co-director Patrick Connolly. I was also fortunate to have had many performance opportunities with Theatre St. Thomas (Godspell, Translations, The Threepenny Opera) and Valley Young Company (Hair, The Crucible, Company, Songs for a New World, Godspell). After moving across the country from New Brunswick to British Columbia in 2010, I completed my Masters of Education in Arts Education and taught for two years as a Drama and English teacher at Diamond Elementary in Surrey, BC.

Currently, I am the MYP Theatre Arts teacher at the Canadian International School of Beijing (2014-2021). I teach all drama classes for grades 6 to 9 students and am one of the founders and directors of CISB StageCats. Both MYP Theatre and after-school drama were in their early stages when I first arrived at CISB in 2014, and after seven years both programs have grown substantially – the MYP has developed into a cohesive program extending into grade 10 and the StageCats produced 9 plays (including 6 original), 7 musicals and many other scenes, monologues, songs and dances. Being a part of the amazing StageCats team has allowed me to tap into my creativity and share my love of acting, singing, dancing and scheduling, as well as try my hand at new skills like advertising/ promotion. Another collaboration that began in fall 2019 (but was obviously interrupted in early 2020) was my work providing theatre-related support to elementary classes. This ranged from providing skill-specific theatre lessons, integrating drama into units of study and providing feedback on concert performances. Drama across the curriculum is an area I hope to continue to explore.

At the end of this school year (June 2021), I will be moving back to my hometown of Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. I do not know exactly what the future holds, but I do know that I will continue to find ways to live a life that aligns with my passions, and that allows me to cultivate a love of theatre and the arts in others.

About the Site:

This website is going through a transitional phase, as it began as a theatre blog for a specific school. My hope is that the re-vamped site will act as a) a portfolio of my past work in arts education and youth theatre production b) a place to share information about my current and future work in theatre and education and c) a blog focusing on topics related to arts, theatre and education.
